The Majority Of Teen Society

The Majority of Teen Society

The “kids today” phrase usually annoys me, they talk about the kind of music we

listen to and the clothes we wear, but I think they are right about one thing. The majority

of the teenagers in school, my school at least, hate to learn. I don’t think “kids today”

works for this statement, “people today” is more accurate, but I’m only talking about what

I see in my school.. What I have seen in my school, is that teenagers hate to learn, read,

think, imagine, and are disrespectful.

Learning is huge issue. No one wants to learn anymore. I want to learn all I can.

People don’t understand all subjects, perfectly understandable. I don’t understand math at

all, but I try to, I hate that I don’t understand it. I can’t memorize things very well, and I

can’t pay instruments, that doesn’t stop me from liking to learn. I’m lazy sometimes and

don’t do my homework. I’ve noticed that is not the stupid people who get made fun of

anymore, it’s the intelligent ones. For instance, my friend and I were called stupid because

we used a word that the other kids we were talking to didn’t know. I feel stupid if I don’t

know what a word means. The majority of students only come to school because they

have to and won’t make any money if they don’t.

Reading is now a chore, put in the same category as a textbook or an extremely

boring movie. I enjoy reading because it shows different perspectives of life, human, or

beyond even that. You’re entering another person’s mind. Not only the character’s but

the author’s. It sound corny, all the children shows say it, you get to be, or see, a way

another person lives, where they live, and the way they think. Too many are accustomed

to only one way of perceiving thoughts. If you have a good enough imagination, you can

see what the character sees, and understand why they do. This comes in handy for life for

understanding where another person is coming from. Movies are great for entertainment,

but I bet you can’t understand what the characters are thinking unless the narrator is

telling you, reading to you; in books you can.

Thinking, I don’t mean math problems, I mean common sense. Occasionally

people can lack common sense and do something they might not ordinarily do, that’s

understandable. Once you have those bouts constantly, it’s not lack of common sense, it’s

stupidity by your own choice. Teens who get pregnant because they don’t use protection.

Messing up on birthcontrol is a mistake, not using protection is stupid. I might sound like

an after school special, but this is how I see the lack of thinking in teen society. Drinking

apparently makes people feel nice, that’s a good thing, if you like feeling nice because the

chemical tells your brain it’s supposed to be happy now. I’d rather be happy because I tell

myself I’m happy. Not to mention all the downfalls, no control over your actions if you

get drunk, alcohol poisoning, addictive, getting sick, that’s four to one, not only do they

outweigh the good, but the results are much worse. I think they put age limits on their for

a reason, not all adults are responsible, but I think many will grow up enough to drink

responsibly. Drugs are practically the same as alcohol, except their is no legal age. The

most often excuse I hear is “I want to live!”. Getting a girl pregnant, you live the rest of

your life taking care of someone else. Getting a disease from not using protection, could

cut your life short, or give you a burden for the rest of your life. Drinking, could shorten

your life in many ways if not used responsibly. Also, drugs could take your life. Having

fun is living, but when you rely on something other than yourself to trick your brain into

thinking you’re happy, is when you become lazy.

Imagination is images, colours, hope, dreams, wishes, everything you think of.

Being creative and having imagination is different. Imagination is a mutation of creativity.

Creativity is showing the way you think. Imagination is so much more than that, it’s

creating worlds and ideas that is hard to show on a piece of paper. Teens have lots of

creativity, they can do lots of crazy things, but many don’t have an imagination. I am a

writer, I think the best thing about writing is I can show people thoughts and images from

my mind. It’s as close as you can get before reading someone’s mind. My writing often

has no plot, more often I get a picture of idea in my head and I try to describe it as best I

can. Artists are the same way, the only difference is they display it by vision, and writers

display it through the mind. Society is taking that away. The blame television, music,

videogames, everything else for the problems they don’t have enough courage to fix.

They ban books for fear their children might find comfort in reading something that makes

them think and imagine. Most lose their imagination before the get into high school.

Disrespect is something that maybe isn’t the majority, but about half and half.

Many of the classes I am in are for students that are college bound. The kids in those

classes are very respectful to the teacher and their other students. I am also in a couple

classes where the kids are so rude I want to hit them over the head with an intelligence

stick. I can understand people talking, in a regular voice or a whisper. Shouting is

disrespectful and depending on the situation, sometimes even whispering is. I don’t

understand why it is so hard for students to be quiet when they are asked. Even if another

student asks them, they look at you like you’re the one doing something wrong. I’m just

glad that many of my classes are respectful.

In conclusion, I feel that the majority of teen society needs a huge dose of

intelligence, common sense, and imagination. Teenagers have become more disrespectful

and lazy, partially because so have the parents of the children, and partially because of the

own child’s stupidity. Pick up a book, make your own ideas about how life should be,

learn things, be respectful, use common sense, it’s not that hard, I promise.
