The Future, As I See It
By: Azazel
As I walked by the police station, I glanced up, sighed, and lowered my eyes once more. They were still working up there. Three years ago, Microsoft bought the moon. Now they were working with something up there. Nobody knew what it would be, but you could see the work from earth. It was going to be big. I had been up to Alpha Station once, and from there I had seen the moon closer. The work was hideous, large, gray steel-frames protruded from the ground, and everywhere you could see the buildings. Back then, I was young and optimistic. That was two months ago. Now I was a battle-hardened young man, pessimistic about the future, and on my way "home".
As I got "home" to the fortress, I heard about the news. Microsoft was finished with the work. They would show everyone, tonight, what they had been building. Everyone in the company was going to go out, celebrating. I thought it was odd. It seemed only yesterday, when I was ten, that almost everybody hated Microsoft, and what they did. I disliked them.
The party had been going on for a while, and I went outside, to get some fresh air. At twelve o'clock, they said. At twelve o'clock. Then Microsoft would... Something hit me in the head, and I fell forwards... Darkness was everything.
I groaned. As I slowly opened my eyes, I saw two men standing over me, Jake, and another one. Jake didn't like me. I knew that. He grinned at me, and shot me in the stomach. Then he left. I didn't react at first, I just wondered how he could hate me so much. Then the pain was everything. I tried to scream, as the heat in my stomach burned me, burned my mind. In the distance I could hear a bell, telling everyone that now was the time, twelve o'clock. I didn't care about the clock, everything was fire. Then everything was numb, I didn't feel anything. I looked up, saw the moon, and it was ... twitching. Turning. It blinked at me, faded away, and then it came back. But this time it had red, blue, and other colors in it. I screamed as I saw what microsoft had done to it. It was their logo...
I woke up, screaming. It had been a dream. I tossed of my blanket, and went to the window, just to be sure. The moon was there, blue-white. In the distance, I could hear the chimes telling me that somewhere, Windows had been succesfully shut down.
